Day 2 - Ennerdale to Rosthwaite

An early start took the Intrepid Trio around the shores of Ennerdale. The early morning sun reflecting off the lake was giving them a taste of what was to come later in the day! :-

The walk along the shores entailed in parts, far more of a rock scramble than a pleasant walk. :-

There's three places connected to Robin Hood along the Coast to Coast Walk.  There is Robin Hood's Bay of course, and further on from here, on the way to Kirkby Stephen is Robin Hood's Grave  This is Robin Hood's Chair by the side of the Ennerdale.  Why it's called that is lost to antiquity. :-

The upper part of Ennerdale valley, being privately owned, has been spoiled, to some extent, by commercial forestry.  Here you can see how the forests have affected the scenery.  The areas in the foreground are where trees have been felled and new ones planted. :-

The path climbs through the pine forests..... :-

eventually reaching, after several miles, the remote Black Sail Youth Hostel. Luckily they were able to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea and a piece of Orange Drizzle cake!

It's a good job they were suitably refreshed because the next part of the walk, the climb up Loft Beck, was, in Patrick's words "Horrendous". Quite a shock for someone whose walking experience is a stroll along the promenade at Cleveleys!  However he did say, "I'm all right when I'm at the top...it's getting there that's the problem!"

The climb was well worth the effort for the fantastic view over Buttermere and Crummock Water.

Almost at the same time Chris was taking the next shot of Buttermere, the nearest one in the photo....:-

I was taking this one from the shores of it. :-

The road alongside Buttermere runs over Honister Pass into Borrowdale valley.  Our Trio were heading for the slate mine at the top of the pass from where they would take the old toll road down the valley.  Here's he start of the road. :-

After a long trek down through Seatoller they eventually came to Rosthwaite. :-

and their journey's end, Gillercombe Guest House. :-

TOMORROW THE JOURNEY CONTINUES TO GRASMERE, ONCE THE HOME OF WILLIAM WORDSWORTH.
