This section of the walk is the shortest at approximately 8 miles. Nevertheless it still involves a steep section at the beginning followed by a gradual descent along Grisedale Beck to the Ullswater Valley.
Before the walkers left there was much concern about this poor little fellow in the hotel garden. How he got in is a mystery, as there is a high deer fence all round the perimeter :-
He had a piece of wood stuck in his mouth and wasn't too happy! By the time I left, a vet from the RSPCA was on his way and hopefully he solved the problem.
The first part of their journey followed Tongue Gill for most of the way up to the highest point. Looking back provided good views of the ridge walk between Calf Crag and Helm Crag. That was the final stage of the yesterday's walk :-
Further up the gill nearing Grisedale Hause it was possible to see the southern end of Lake Windermere in the distance :-
The Trio found a good place to have lunch at Grisedale Hause, the highest point of their route. Windermere is still visible just below the horizon:-
This is Grisedale Tarn at the head of, believe it or not, Grisedale Valley! Grisedale Beck flows out of it. It is this that the walkers will follow all the way to Patterdale ;-
From here the path starts to descend making for easier walking. These two are obviously pleased about that :-
This is where the beck flows out of the tarn. It's been very dry in these parts and all the tarns and lakes are well below their normal levels, this one in particular. Streams and rivers are consequently affected and the shingle banks where Chris and Patrick are standing would normally be covered by a few inches of fast flowing water.
It's quite an easy path down the valley and the Trio were making good time :-
Another group photo from a passerby :-
Looking back from further down the valley :-
I don't think Joe had a shower this morning!
There were no photos taken after this point because they were hurrying down the valley for guess what ...........
After quenching their thirsts we set off to Home Farm to book in :-
Chris decided he hadn't had enough walking during the day so he took the dogs for a walk....or did they take him?
IT'S A BIG DAY TOMORROW! 16 MILES FROM PATTERDALE TO SHAP. IT'S A TOUGH ONE, NOT ONLY FOR THE LENGTH OF IT, THERE'S SOME STEEP CLIMBS TOO!
