"Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree", here's our walkers looking bright eyed and bush tailed before they set off for Danby Wiske.
This section of the walk is approximately 14 miles long, and most of it on the flat. It's farming country, mostly arable, with barley being the main crop. :-
There'll be a lot of road walking (tiresome on the feet!) and a lot of detours around planted fields. The photo above, and the following photo show what it looks like.....flat and uninteresting if you like the high ground. If you do, there's tantalising views of the Cleveland Hills in the distance.
The first obstacle they came across was the A1 road. Known sometimes as the "Great North Road", it is the main east coast road from London to Scotland. For most of its length it is now the M1, taking most of the traffic it carries away from the towns and villages the A1 passes through. This is where the River Swale flows under it. :-
The path then goes by Catterick Race Course (next meeting in two days time!) :-
and on to Catterick Bridge. :-
From there to Bolton-on-Swale. :-
Saint Mary's Churchyard in Bolton-on-Swale was a quiet place to rest and have lunch. :-
A lot of gravestones lean at precarious angles. This is the Jenkins Memorial. :-
Believe it or not Henry Jenkins was born in Ellerton-on-Swale in 1500. He died there in 1670 at the grand old age of 169! The memorial was built by public subscription in his memory and to commemorate his long life.
From Bolton-on-Swale the footpath led through uninteresting countryside where the only thing worthy of photographing was pretty flowers. :-
and the boundary sign for Danby Wiske. :-
Meanwhile I had gone on ahead and found The Old School Guest House, our accommodation for the night. :-
It was on the village green where I waited for them to arrive ...... :-
sitting outside the White Swan pub. Very convenient for a refreshing pint! :-
As there was nowhere to eat locally, Doreen and Frank Phillips, the owners of The Old School House, made an evening meal for us. Shepherds Pie and Apple Pie with cream AND ice cream. :-
DELICIOUS!
TOMORROW, DANBY WISKE TO INGLEBY CROSS.
